2024 BMW i7 Review: A 650-HP Luxurious Electric Sedan

0

After taking the Skoda Rapid for a spin in Stratford, I’ve put together a 2024 BMW i7 review, where I explain more about what the EV has to offer. BMW unveiled the 2024 i7 just a few months ago, and it seems the model is already gaining traction in the electric sedan scene. The recently introduced i7 is BMW’s Flagship luxury sedan, right at the top of the brand’s EV offerings. While most EVs take a performance route, and others take on a luxury and efficient standpoint, the I7 combines the best of all worlds. As the all-electric iteration of BMW’s flagship luxury sedan, the BMW i7 brings together state-of-the-art technology, luxurious comfort, and powerful performance.

Now, I’m not the one to chase cars around the country, especially considering how troubling it can be to ask a car owner or dealership for a review. But the 2024 i7 was worth the trouble. This 2024 BMW i7 review covers every aspect of the all-new luxury sedan, with insights insights into its strengths and areas for improvement.

Overview Of The 2024 BMW i7

The 2024 BMW i7 is one of the newest EVs in 2024, but there’s already so much buzz on it, and for good reason. It’s fun to drive, sporty, and luxury. It comes with about as many cool features as you would expect from a new EV in 2024.

The 2024 i7 comes at a starting MSRP of $105,700, and the luxury EV competes with rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Tesla Model S, and Lucid Air.

Pros and Cons

After carefully looking into the 2024 i7, I’ve put together the perks and quirks of the famed BMW EV. And here’s what I have to say.

Pros

  • Generous interior space
  • Advanced technology features
  • Impressive power and performance

Cons

  • Range not class-leading

What’s New On The 2024 BMW i7?

For 2024, BMW introduces the high-performance M70 xDrive and a new single-motor eDrive50 to the i7 lineup. These additions expand the range.

The new M70 xDrive variant, in particular, is a significant highlight of the 2024 BMW i7 lineup as it brings BMW’s M division’s expertise in high-performance engineering.

Powertrain Options

The 2024 BMW i7 is available in three distinct variants, each offering a unique driving experience:

The i7 eDrive50 has a single electric motor driving the rear wheels, delivering 449 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, the i7 xDrive60 variant produces 536 horsepower and 549 lb-ft of torque.

The i7 M70 xDrive, the flagship model of the lineup, boasts 650 horsepower and 811 lb-ft of torque (with M Sport Boost or Launch Control), making it the most powerful all-electric vehicle BMW has produced to date.

Awesome 0-60 Times

Despite its substantial size and weight, the 2024 BMW i7 offers impressive acceleration. The 449-HP i7 eDrive50 can go from 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, while the 536-hp i7 xDrive60 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. And that’s not all.

Thanks to the 650 horsepower powertrain (with M Sport Boost or Launch Control), the M70 xDrive achieves a 60mph acceleration in 3.5 seconds. This makes the BMW i7  faster than the Genesis G80, which achieves the same feat in 4.9 seconds, or the Mercedes-EQS, which makes it in 4.1 seconds. On a side note, the Audi E-Tron GT has a 3.9-sec 60-mph acceleration time.

Battery And Efficiency

All versions of the 2024 i7 have a 105.6 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery. The bigger the number, the more energy is stored. This is pretty much state-of-the-battery-art at the moment.

BMW’s electric motors don’t use magnets and so don’t require rare-earth materials like cobalt. They’re known as current-excited motors and are manufactured in-house.

Driving Dynamics

On the road, the 2024 BMW i7 delivers a smooth and composed ride like you would expect from a high-end BMW vehicle. It features an adaptive suspension type, which makes the ride just as smooth as the Lucid Air. And of course, being an EV makes it completely silent when driving. That’s why BMW added cool sound features to simulate engine sounds and shifts.

The steering is precise. You will enjoy feeling the front wheels dance to every little input you make in the cockpit just as much as I did. The option of one-pedal driving, thanks to regenerative braking, enhances the driving experience by allowing smooth and efficient deceleration.

Range and Charging

The range of the 2024 BMW i7 varies depending on the model and wheel configuration. The i7 eDrive50, which has a 449 HP setup and, delivers up to 321 miles (19-inch wheels).

With the 536-HP setup and 19-inch wheels, the BMW i7 xDrive60 retains a driving range of up to 317 miles. The high-powered 650-hp M70 xDrive has 21-inch wheels and can drive up to 291 miles on a single charge.

While the range is competitive, the 2024 i7  falls slightly short of rivals like the Tesla Model S (405 miles) and Lucid Air (516 miles). However, the i7 compensates with fast charging capabilities, adding approximately 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes using a high-speed charger.

Interior and Comfort

The interior of the 2024 BMW i7 epitomizes luxury and sophistication. BMW equipped the i7 with the finest materials and advanced features to ensure a first-class experience for both driver and passengers.

Cabin Space

The BMW i7 offers generous interior space. There is ample headroom and legroom on both the front and rear seats, making it extremely accommodating. There is still slightly less legroom in the back than I expected, but it’s enough for an adult to stretch.

The i7’s cabin is filled with leather upholstery and standard oak trim. What I also love inside the 2024 BMW i7 are the customizable interior options through the BMW Individual Composition program to enhance the cabin’s opulence.

BMW offers an optional Luxury Rear Seating package, which adds ventilated and massaging rear seats, providing executive-level comfort.

Technology

The 2024 BMW i7 has advanced technology, including the BMW Curved Display, which integrates a digital driver information display and a feature-rich iDrive infotainment system. This system includes navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system.

The rear-seat entertainment system, dubbed BMW Theater Screen, features a massive 31.3-inch screen with up to 8K resolution and Amazon Fire TV compatibility, offering an unparalleled entertainment experience for rear passengers. during my 2024 BMW i7 review, I enjoyed the high-definition screens.

Exterior Design

The 2024 BMW i7 boasts a commanding presence with its large dimensions and bold design. The new M70 xDrive variant adds aerodynamic enhancements, black accents, and optional two-tone paint schemes. What makes it stand out the most is the way i7’s design balances elegance with modernity.

The BMW i7 is a large luxury sedan. In actual dimensions is a foot longer than the Mercedes-EQ EQS Sedan and the Tesla Model S.

For the 2024 model year, the i7 M70 xDrive comes with various illuminated grille, aerodynamic additions, and black touches. Top exterior highlights of the 2024 BMW i7 include the Frozen matte finishes and eight 2-tone color combinations.

Safety Features

The 2024 BMW i7 has not yet been crash-tested by U.S. agencies. It comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane departure warning, blindspot monitoring, and Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking

4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty

The 2024 BMW i7’s warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.
