2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Goes Hybrid-Only as Lineup Gets Major Updates

Mitsubishi has recently revealed major updates across its U.S. lineup for 2026, led by a major shift for its best-selling SUV, the Outlander. The brand says the 2026 Outlander is going hybrid-only. Alongside a facelifted Outlander PHEV, the brand also introduced powertrain and technology changes for the Eclipse Cross and the Outlander Sport, among other updates.

The updates signal Mitsubishi’s push toward electrification, and I have to say, I’m excited about it. All new Outlander models are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, with the PHEV scheduled in early 2026.

2026 Outlander Hybrid Updates

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander will no longer be offered with a traditional gas-only engine. Instead, it introduces a new turbocharged 1.5-liter mild-hybrid powertrain, replacing the current 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder.

As of August 2025, Mitsubishi hasn’t revealed official specs yet. But, we know that the outgoing 2.5L produced 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, while the non-hybrid version of the 1.5L engine makes 152 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The new mild-hybrid system is designed to enhance off-the-line torque and drivability, thanks to the electric assist. However, the 2026 Outlander isn’t a full hybrid and won’t offer EV-only driving.

This makes the 2026 Outlander Mitsubishi’s first model in the United States to go hybrid-only. This improves the SUV’s fuel economy and helps it meet stricter emissions standards without dramatically increasing costs. The Outlander’s engine is similar to the one used in the Eclipse Cross.

In addition to the powertrain change, Mitsubishi is introducing new trim options for the 2025 Outlander:

  • LE Trim, which slots between the base ES and mid-range SE.
  • SEL Black Edition, with darker exterior details for a more premium look.
  • A new Ralliart model, likely featuring sporty styling and unique design cues.

2026 Outlander Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) Updates

2026 Mitsubishi Outlander

Mitsubishi has also unveiled the facelifted Outlander Plug-In Hybrid. This brings the PHEV version in line with the refreshed styling introduced on the standard model last year. The exterior updates of the latest Outlander include a new front bumper and revised grille for a sharper, modern look. It also features smoked taillights and new 20-inch wheels.

The interior of the Outlander is just as cool as the exterior. It features a redesigned center console, a new Yamaha premium audio system, and upgraded interior materials across the board. The brand offers an available 12.3-inch infotainment screen for higher-end trims, along with heated and ventilated front seats.

Under the skin, Mitsubishi has confirmed a larger-capacity battery, which will improve the vehicle’s electric-only driving range, though exact figures are yet to be released. The powertrain is also said to be more refined and responsive, thanks to a retuned suspension setup, which includes updated bushings, revised springs, and dampers. It also comes with new stabilizer bars for improved ride comfort. The updated Outlander PHEV is scheduled to arrive in early 2026 and will continue to be Mitsubishi’s flagship plug-in offering in the U.S. market.

Outlander Sport & Eclipse Cross Changes

The latest Mitsubishi Outlander remains largely unchanged in 2026, except for a new Trail Edition. While the brand hasn’t yet provided many details, the Trail Edition will include unique wheels and exclusive graphics. It will be like the Jeep Avenger 4xe of the Outlander family, so to speak. It’s a small update, but it helps keep the model relevant in a competitive compact SUV segment.

As for the 2026 Eclipse Cross, the biggest change is the removal of built-in navigation. Mitsubishi now expects drivers to rely entirely on Android Auto or Apple CarPlay for navigation and infotainment needs. In addition to that, SEL and SEL Touring trims will receive new “Eclipse Cross” badging on the hood. This way, they’ll offer a slight styling refresh for the top-spec variants.
