A Detailed Look At The 2025 Toyota bZ5x Three-Row Electric SUV

The 2025 Toyota bZ5X is a few months away from hitting the market. Drawing inspiration from the bZ concept SUV, the 2025 bZ5X is expected to maintain its concept’s sleek and bold design. Renderings suggest a distinctive look characterized by bold lines and squared-up edges. What sets the 2025 bZ5X apart is its size, comparable to the Toyota Highlander. With a length possibly reaching 197 inches, this electric bz5x SUV positions itself as a spacious and family-friendly model with a three-row, 7-seater configuration. In the competitive landscape, the bZ5X will rival the Kia EV6. For road trip lovers, the bZ5x SUV will deliver an estimated driving range between 380 and 420 miles and super-speed charging times. In this detailed preview of the 2025 Toyota bZ5X, we discuss its design, interior features, performance, and key specifications.

While lots of manufacturers are going all in, fully embracing the EV surge, Toyota has taken a measured and composed approach. While they have been leaders in the hybrid domain, venturing into fully electric vehicles has been a gradual process for Toyota. This deliberate approach appears to be yielding positive results, particularly as other electric vehicle manufacturers are scaling back investments due to sluggish sales.

How Will The 2025 Toyota bZ5X SUV Look?

About three years ago, in December 2021, Toyota made waves when it previewed the large bZ concept. The large SUV was unveiled alongside the bZ Compact SUV, bZ Small Crossover, and bZ SDN (sedan) concept vehicles. These were meant to be part of Toyota’s bZ series lineup. Drawing from Toyota’s history with previous models, the production 2025 Toyota bZ5X will closely resemble the concept. But of course, Toyota will likely make a few tweaks and improvements tailored for everyday practicality.

As we mentioned before, we’ve seen lots of renderings of the latest bZ5X lately. A rendering from Carscoops featured a more hammerhead shark face, with bold lines and squared-up edges. This is, a characteristic shared across some of Toyota’s most recent electric and hybrid models.

The exterior is likely to feature a sculpted profile with subtle plastic cladding, a sweeping greenhouse, and sizable alloy wheels. For a more border appeal, the 2025 bZ5X will have LED taillights extending above the rear fenders.

The 2025 Toyota bZ5X Is An Electric Version Of The Toyota Highlander

Of all the things we’ve heard about the large bZ5x, one factor that seems to stand out above all is that the 2025 bZ5X will be similar in size to the Toyota Highlander. In terms of dimensions, expect the bZ5X to have a length of 197 inches (which is 5,000 mm). With its large third row, the 2024 Toyota Highlander can easily transport up to eight people. As a large SUV, the 2025 bZ5X should also be able to transport between seven and eight occupants.

The advantage of its electric framework allows for ample space, especially in a three-row 7-seater configuration, prioritizing passenger comfort and cargo capacity. This positions the bZ5x as a family-friendly model, emphasizing space and practicality as key selling points.

The Toyota bZ5X Will Compete With The Kia EV9

Sources say the 2025 bZ5X will compete with the new Kia EV6. Let’s take a moment to look at what this means exactly. So, the 2024 Kia EV6 has a driving range of up to 708 kilometers. With a 350 kW DC fast charger, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Using a 50 kW DC fast charger, it takes 73 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent, whereas a home charger takes 36 hours. This means the bZ5x might become one of the best road trip electric cars too.

As a competitor of the EV6, the 2025 bZ5X will offer a driving range of between 380 and 420 miles. Due to its larger dimensions and increased weight, the new bZ5X is expected to lean towards a higher-capacity battery pack, surpassing the 71.4 kWh unit found in the bZ4x. This augmentation aims to enhance the overall range and expedite charging times. Using a DC fast charger, expect super-speed charging times. It will take 20 minutes for the bZ5X to go from 0 to 80 percent.

In the realm of performance, Toyota is likely to incorporate a dual electric motor configuration, facilitating all-wheel drive (AWD) functionality and swift acceleration. This positioning positions it as a contender against rivals such as the Kia EV9.

The bZ5x Interior Embodies Luxury

At the time of this writing, Toyota hasn’t yet unveiled pictures of the Toyota bZ5x interior. However,  the production Toyota bZ5x model will probably share a dashboard design with the smaller bZ4x. This includes Three-row electric SUV technology technology and elements borrowed from newer models like the Prius.

On the bZ5x infotainment system side, expect a range of suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The 2025 bZ5x will feature all the latest technology a\menitirs such as the Toyota Safety Sense.

The 2025 bZ5x Might Be Underpinned By The e-TNGA Architecture

While specific technical details of the three-row SUV remain undisclosed, we think the bZ5X will adopt an extended variant of the e-TNGA architecture. If you recall, the e-TNGA was essentially Toyota’s answer to Volkswagen’s MEB platform. This vehicle architecture was designed for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive applications and is divided into five components. These include the front, center, and rear modules, as well as the battery and motor. Each module is being developed in up to three versions, including three different lithium-ion battery capacities. This e-TNGA platform brings benefits like a battery capacity ranging from 50 kWh to 100 kWh, driving ranges of up to 372 miles, and great-wheel drive systems, among other things. Some of Toyota’s newest 2024 cars feature the same architecture right now, such as the BZ4.

Where Will The bZ5X Be Produced?

Official confirmation has been provided that the forthcoming three-row electric SUV will roll off the production lines at Toyota’s Kentucky plant, commencing in 2025. This is the same facility that makes the Camry and RAV4 hybrids. It will soon extend its manufacturing portfolio to include the new electric model.

The electric vehicle’s batteries will be supplied by Toyota’s recently expanded facility in North Carolina. With a substantial injection of an additional $8 billion in investments, the North Carolina plant is set to quadruple its capacity, with plans for 10 operational battery lines, ensuring a robust and efficient supply chain.

The bZ5X Will Spawn A large Subaru SUV Model

The Toyota bZ5x  will become the foundation for a Subaru-branded counterpart, following the approach taken with the Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra sibling models. This Subaru version will undergo production at the same Kentucky plant as its Toyota counterpart, presenting another SUV choice for the U.S. market. While it’s expected to share a similar appearance with the Toyota bZ5x, there’s a possibility of incorporating distinctive Subaru characteristics.

Similar to the Lexus RZ, which shares its platform with the Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra, the impending SUV will likely have unique design elements. But, it’s still speculation at this point.

Toyota Has More Planned In The Electric Vehicle Field

Toyota isn’t idle in the electric vehicle field. While the bZ4x is Toyota’s only electric SUV in North America, the brand has ambitious plans for the future. They are gearing up for a significant leap with the introduction of 10 new electric vehicles globally. That’s a future to look forward to.

2025 bZ5x Release Date

As of now, expect the 2025 Toyota bZ5X to launch sometime in 2025. Till then, keep an eye out for camouflaged prototypes in the coming months. If you look hard enough, you might even spot a production-ready bz5X concept. But for now, enjoy the renderings.
