Chassis problems that could compromise the safety of passengers during a crash have triggered a BMW i4 recall. The 2024 i4 made its way to the made its way to the market earlier this year, so this recall isn’t a good look, especially considering that it’s the second one already. This follows the recall of the Volvo EX30, which was recalled shortly after its anticipated 2024 release. So what’s up with the i4’s recall anyway?Â
BMW recently issued a recall for 2024 i4 electric models due to a critical chassis flaw that could compromise the vehicle’s structural integrity in a crash. The BMW i4 recall affects three models: the eDrive40, xDrive40, and M50. Upon investigation, the brand found a defect in the left-side longitudinal beam of the i4. According to BMW, this beam could cause excess chassis deformation in the event of a crash. The chassis problem could increase the risk of injury and potential fire.
Why Is The BMW i4 Recalled?
The BMW i4 recall affects 1,150 units manufactured between March 7, 2024, and April 25, 2024. The models are being recalled because of a chassis flaw that involves cracks in the left-side longitudinal beam near the rivet flange supporting the rear wheel arch. These cracks make the chassis vulnerable in a collision. The structural issue can cause the area around the second row and high-voltage battery to deform excessively. Besides the heightened risk of injuries in the event of a crash, the faulty chassis on the BMW i4 can potentially lead to a battery-related fire, just like the recently recalled Genesis G80.

Previous Recalls and New Developments
If you’ve been following the electric car, then you know that this isn’t the first time the BMW i4 recall. Earlier in the year, BMW issued a separate recall for i4 and i5 models due to battery concerns. Fortunately, BMW contained and repaired all impacted vehicles intended for the U.S. market.
However, further investigations in July revealed that additional i4 models outside the initial batch might also be affected by the chassis issue.
Affected Models and Owner Instructions
For the BMW i4 recall related to the chassis problem, the brand began notifying affected owners by October 7, 2024, via first-class mail. Upon receiving their notice, BMW i4 owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to authorized dealerships. The i4 models are then inspected by technicians. If necessary, the technicians replace the left-side longitudinal beam. BMW has not yet specified the repair time for the fix, though the company assures that it will be done at no cost to the owners. That’s right. Owners will not pay anything for repairs done under the chassis-related recall.
