Car And Driver recently spotted a camouflaged prototype during the testing phase, and we already have an idea what what you should expect from the beloved SUV. While this is the first glimpse, we expect the new 4Runner to have the Toyota Tacoma’s hybrid and nonhybrid four-cylinder engine options.

For good reason, Toyota 4Runner has been one of the brand’s best-selling SUVs. There are rumors that it will be Toyota’s contender against the Bronco and Wrangler. Could this imply a removable roof? The idea doesn’t disappoint me, especially considering the resemblance to the current 4Runner and the proximity of the new LC to its predecessor.

We anticipate the upcoming 4Runner to feature the i-Force 2.4-liter turbo 4 engine and an 8-speed automatic 4×4 system, akin to the new Tacoma. The V6 engine will not return, as Toyota is likely reserving it for the new Lexus GX. The new performance-oriented hybrid turbo 4 engine will go to the Land Cruiser. In terms of aesthetics, the 4Runner’s exterior will resemble a Tacoma pickup transformed into an SUV, evident in the front grille, hood, body panels, taillights, and rear end. The interior will also have a similar feel.

The design will take inspiration from the 2024 Tacoma, influencing both the appearance and standard features. Following the tradition, the 4Runner’s pricing will be somewhat in line with the Tacoma, with a projected increase of around $3,000 to $4,000. Despite this, it will offer more features as standard compared to the current generation. Hitting the showrooms in 2024, the 4Runner aims to hit the market around the same time next year.
