The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is about to join the SUV market this year with a redesign that modernizes Toyota’s best-selling SUV. We’ve already discussed the reasons we would want to drive it. According to Toyota, the 2025 4Runner will mark the start of the sixth-generation 4Runner lineup. Ever since we’ve learned about this impending SUV, Toyota has, so far, managed to keep its essential details under wraps. Car And Driver recently spotted a camouflaged prototype during the testing phase, and we already have an idea what what you should expect from the beloved SUV. While this is the first glimpse, we expect the new 4Runner to have the Toyota Tacoma’s hybrid and nonhybrid four-cylinder engine options.
Overview Of The 2025 Toyota 4Runner
For good reason, Toyota 4Runner has been one of the brand’s best-selling SUVs. The last time the 4Runner received a makeover was back in 2014 when Toyota threw in some fresh tech and an updated N280 shape. If you recall, the Fresh also dropped the fuel-efficient 2.7L Inline-4 Gas engine that joined the powertrain roster in 2010. This left the 4.0L V6 engine and 5-speed auto as the only options across the line, which included the SR5, Trail, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-road, Trail Premium, as well as the more recent N280 Venture Special Edition, the Limited Nightshade Edition and last year’s 40th Anniversary Special Edition models.
And, honestly, it took them long enough. It will be nice to see a 2025 4Runner redesign, with all the updated tech and possibly a hybrid PHEV powertrain in the mix.
What’s New In The 2025 Toyota 4Runner SUV?
Expect a total overhaul for the 2025 4Runner, drawing inspiration from the recently introduced 2024 Tacoma pickup truck. The redesigned 4Runner is likely to make its debut in late 2024, with sales expected to commence the following year.
2025 Toyota 4Runner Appearance
I’m optimistic that the 2025 4Runner might resemble a scaled-down version of the Sequoia. I envision it as a “baby Sequoia” just like the Tacoma is a smaller counterpart to the Tundra.
There are rumors that it will be Toyota’s contender against the Bronco and Wrangler. Could this imply a removable roof? The idea doesn’t disappoint me, especially considering the resemblance to the current 4Runner and the proximity of the new LC to its predecessor.
Confirmed Details On The 2025 Toyota 4Runner Powertrain
We anticipate the upcoming 4Runner to feature the i-Force 2.4-liter turbo 4 engine and an 8-speed automatic 4×4 system, akin to the new Tacoma. The V6 engine will not return, as Toyota is likely reserving it for the new Lexus GX. The new performance-oriented hybrid turbo 4 engine will go to the Land Cruiser. In terms of aesthetics, the 4Runner’s exterior will resemble a Tacoma pickup transformed into an SUV, evident in the front grille, hood, body panels, taillights, and rear end. The interior will also have a similar feel.
Our Expectations On The 2025 Toyota 4Runner
The 2025 4Runner will share similarities with the 2024 Land Cruiser but at a more affordable price. It will have options for 2-wheel drive (2WD) and a non-hybrid model, making it approximately $6,000 to $8,000 cheaper than the Cruiser. The design will take inspiration from the 2024 Tacoma, influencing both the appearance and standard features. Following the tradition, the 4Runner’s pricing will be somewhat in line with the Tacoma, with a projected increase of around $3,000 to $4,000. Despite this, it will offer more features as standard compared to the current generation. Hitting the showrooms in 2024, the 4Runner aims to hit the market around the same time next year.
Pricing Of The Latest 4Runner
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner sales will begin at approximately $43,000 and can reach up to $59,000, varying based on the chosen trim and additional options.
