After spending months behind the wheel, I looked into the common problems with the Toyota Ractis and went through complaints across multiple platforms in search of patterns. My research found that the most problematic years of the Ractis are 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2012. You may be on the market looking for this hatch, or you might have come across some of these problems yourself. Either way, I’ve provided guides on how to repair them..Â
The Toyota Ractis is a beloved compact, tall-boy hatchback that’s famous for its spacious interior and fuel efficiency. The Toyota Ractis primarily offered two petrol engine options: a 1.3-liter and a 1.5-liter. Toyota discontinued the Ractis in 2016, replacing it with new models like the Toyota Sienta and the Toyota Tank/Roomy. Today, the Ractis is one of the most imported Japanese cars roaming African countries, like Malawi, Kenya, and Zambia. But, like any used import, certain years are more prone to mechanical issues than others. Without further ado, these are the disadvantages of the Ractis.Â
1. CVT Transmission Jerking or Hesitation
One of the most common Toyota Ractis problems is the CVT transmission jerking, with over a thousand reports. Many owners reported experiencing problems with the CVT, which was the widely purchased transmission option. If your Ractis is jerking when you try to accelerate, the culprit is usually the CVT. The problem may also present itself through symptoms like shuddering during acceleration or delayed gear shifts.
The CVT problems are common in 2007–2012 Toyota Ractis models. This is because these model years often came with early CVT units prone to fluid degradation. However, you can correct the issue in several ways.
To fix the CVT issue, your Ractis may need a CVT fluid flush. If the issue is more severe, you may have to replace the entire transmission system. So, noticing the problem and fixing it early may save you tons of money. Also, during regular maintenance, avoid using standard ATF. Toyota recommends using the Toyota CVT Fluid FE for CVT transmissions like the one in the Ractis.

2. Weak Battery & Electrical Glitches
Electrical glitches are very common in the 2007–2011 Toyota Ractis models. Most times, these glitches are caused by a weak battery, but they may also be the result of wiring issues, which is what most owners reported.
If your Ractis has a weak battery or electrical issues, your radio may reset unexpectedly, and you may notice the dashboard lights turning on and off. And i think this goes without saying, but the best way to notice a weak battery is through the ignition. Starting problems are often related to issues with the battery.
To fix electrical glitches and battery issues in the Toyota Ractis, consider buying a new battery, especially if you notice starting issues. Also, check the ground wiring and ensure that there aren’t any short circuits, worn-out, or exposed wires.Â
3. Overheating Issues With The Ractis
Overheating is another common problem with the Toyota Ractis, and something I experienced myself when driving along the M1 highway in Lilongwe, Malawi. The overheating issue is mostly prevalent in the 2006-2008 Ractis models, although a few reported patterns pointed to the 2011 model, too.
When your Ractis is overheating, you may see the temperature gauge randomly rising when you’re in traffic, especially when it’s not supposed to be. This issue is caused by failing radiator fans or internal coolant blockages.
To fix the overheating problem in the Toyota Ractis, start by testing the fans. If they fail to work properly, you may need to flush the radiator. While you’re at it, inspect the thermostat, as it’s often the culprit behind overheating.
4. Suspension Noises
Some owners reported hearing unusual knocking and clunking suspension sounds, especially from the rear. The knocking sounds are more noticeable when driving over bumps. The issue is common in older models from 2006 to 2010.
Suspension components wear out after a while. Ideally, suspension system components should be inspected every 50,000 miles, according to MoogParts. And since a 2006 model should, in 2025, be about 20 years old, suspension components that haven’t been properly inspected and replaced will wear out and result in knocking sounds. The ride may also become incredibly unpleasant.
To fix the suspension noises in the Ractis, replace the shocks or worn bushings, and inspect all suspension links.Â

5. Rapid Tire Wear And Uneven Tire Wear
Many Toyota Ractis owners have reported seeing uneven wear on tires, especially on the inner edges. This problem is common in the 2006–2010 models.
Uneven tire wear is largely caused by poor wheel alignment and worn suspension components, especially lower control arms.
To fix the issue, have a trusted mechanic inspect the suspension and perform a proper wheel alignment. If left unchecked, tyre life drops significantly and handling worsens.
6. Sticking or Failing Power Windows
A common annoyance in older Toyota Ractis models is power windows that move slowly, get stuck, or stop midway. This problem affects 2007–2010 models.
The issue is mostly caused by dirt and grime in the window tracks or worn-out regulators and motors. Sometimes, failing power windows may be the result of a weak battery or electrical issues caused by faulty wiring.
To fix failing power windows, clean and lubricate the window tracks using a silicone spray. If that doesn’t help, you may need to replace the regulator assembly.
7. Weak or Failing Air Conditioning System
In warmer regions, drivers report poor A/C performance. While some say the A/C is not cooling enough, others say it’s blowing warm air entirely. This problem affects the 2006–2008, 2011–2012 models. This is unfortunately a big disadvantage of the Toyota Ractis.
The air conditioning system can fail due to a variety of reasons, including refrigerant leaks, compressor issues, electrical problems, clogged filters, and issues with the condenser or other related components.
To fix the A/C issue in the Ractis, begin with a refrigerant check and cabin filter replacement. If the issue persists, inspect the compressor and cooling fan.

8. Check Engine Light Or ABS Dashboard Lights
Many Ractis owners frequently reported seeing the “Check Engine” and “ABS” lights. This is common in older models made from 2007 to 2012. Sometimes the dashboard lights may appear and disappear randomly.
Random check engine light and other dashboard warning lights are caused by several factors, especially wiring issues. If the ABS turns on and off, there may be a problem with sensors, particularly the ABS wheel speed sensors.
Because dashboard lights are connected to various sensors, the first step in diagnosing and fixing the flickering check engine light issue is to use an OBD-II scanner to read the fault codes, then replace the affected sensor.
9. Poor Fuel Economy
One of the Toyota Ractis’ problems is poor fuel economy. Some owners report fuel consumption as low as 5 km/L, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The overconsumption of fuel affects the 2006, 2008, and 2012 models and is caused by dirty air filters, worn-out spark plugs, clogged injectors, or bad oxygen sensors.
To fix the poor fuel economy issue in the Ractis, start with a full engine tune-up. This means replace air filters, clean the injectors, and check the fuel system for leaks or inefficiencies.
10. Excessive Engine Vibration (Worn Engine Mounts)
One of the more overlooked issues is vibration during idle or harsh jerks when shifting gears. This problem affects 2006–2010 Toyota Ractis models.
If the engine is shaking, it may mean that the engine mounts are cracked or deteriorated. Normally, these absorb the movement. Driving with damaged engine mounts may stress other drivetrain components.
To fix the engine shaking issue in the Ractis, consider replacing the mounts. You’ll be glad to learn that this is a relatively easy fix and should restore the drive’s smoothness.
