2025 Tesla Roadster: What We Know So Far

The eagerly awaited 2025 Tesla Roadster is set to hit production next year. According to CEO Elon Musk, the Next-Gen 2025 Roadster will have a 0-60mph acceleration in under a second. This announcement comes over six years after the initial reveal of the Roadster. We all remember the waves the Roadster made in 08′, when Tesla told us that it would have a 0-60mph time of 1.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250mph. The ambitious targets also included an impressive range of 620 miles. The stakes are so much higher with the 2025 Tesla Roadster’s sub-one-second means triple-motor setup with  800 – 1,000 hp and at least 7,375 lb-ft of torque. 

As a 2025 model, the new Tesla Roadster is still months away from production. So it will be a while before can spot 2025 Tesla Roadster spy photos, let alone a production-ready next-gen Roadster. But, from what we know, the new Roadster will compete with the new Audi E-Tron GT RS, the Porsche Taycan, and the McLaren Artura. Some outlets also think the Roadster will be a perfect SpaceX Falcon 9 rival. After all the 2025 Roadster production is a result of a Tesla and SpaceX collaboration, according to Musk.

As the Model 3 and Model Y captivate global audiences, Tesla’s success can be traced back to its flagship vehicle, the Roadster. 

Introduced for the 2008 model year and built on the Lotus Elise platform, the original Roadster may seem modest by today’s Tesla standards. Depending on the model, the original Roadster could go from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.9 seconds. It could cover 244 miles on a single charge of its lithium-ion battery pack. Nevertheless, it holds a significant place in Tesla’s history. Now, the Roadster is set to make a comeback.

In a recent Twitter announcement, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, revealed exciting updates about the 2025 Tesla Roadster. Musk emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the project, declaring, “Tonight, we significantly elevated the design objectives for the new Tesla Roadster.”

When describing the upcoming vehicle, Musk hinted at a groundbreaking collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, his rocket company. Musk affirmed that the 2025 Tesla Roadster production design is now finalized. Buyers should expect the Next-Gen Roadster official release by the end of 2024, with shipments planned for 2025.

In response to a user on Twitter, Elon Musk provided further insights into the 2025 Tesla Roadster’s performance, confirming the accelerating from 0-60mph in less than a second. However, Musk intriguingly downplayed this acceleration achievement, stating that it was “the least interesting part” of the car.

While Musk’s statements generate significant excitement, there remains anticipation and hope that Tesla can successfully deliver on these ambitious promises. The real test lies in the Roadster’s actual performance and features when the Roadster hits the roads. 

The 2025 Tesla Roadster Is A High-Performance Electric Car Super Car

Positioned as an all-electric supercar, the 2025 Roadster optimizes the capabilities of aerodynamic engineering. It will achieve record-setting levels of performance and efficiency. Best of both worlds, as the saying goes. Inside, the Roadster stands as the first supercar accommodating seating for four individuals. 

Like the previous edition, the 2025 Tesla Roadster will likely include a lightweight, removable Glass Roof. It will enhance the driving experience by offering an open-air, convertible option.

What We Expect From The 2025 Tesla Roadster Electric Sports Car

The upcoming 2025 Tesla Roadster will likely have an all-wheel drive that features a triple-motor setup. This configuration consists of one motor dedicated to each rear wheel and another for the front two wheels. Powering this electric marvel is a substantial 200-kWh battery, ensuring an extended driving range.

While Tesla has disclosed a notable output figure of 10,000 newton-meters of torque, equivalent to approximately 7,375 lb-ft, there’s a presumption that this figure is measured at the wheels rather than the output shafts, deviating from common industry practice. 

To offer a more realistic estimate, we turn to Tesla’s latest “Plaid” powertrain, playfully named after a joke from the film Spaceballs. Based on current information, we think the 2025 Roadster will have a horsepower range between 800 and 1,000. With all this power available from zero RPM, the driving experience is expected to be nothing short of astonishing.

How The Tesla Roadster Will Square Up To Its Competition

As mentioned, the 2025 Roadster will rival the 2025 Porsche Taycan, the McLaren Artura, the SpaceX Falcon 9, and the Audi E-Tron GT RS. Let’s take a look at some of these competitors

2025 Tesla Roadster Vs 2025 Porsche Taycan

While the last Taycan had a 93.4 kWh battery capacity, the new Porsche Taycan comes with a better range and faster charging. Porsche has added a 105kWh battery to its Performance Battery Plus package for the 2025 model year. The Taycan series has total power outputs of up to 402 HP (Taycan), 536 HP (Taycan 4S), 871 HP (Taycan Turbo), or 938 HP (Taycan Turbo S) with Overboost Power. We assume that the 2025 Roadster will be delivered between 800 and 1000 horsepower, making it a more favorable competitor

Expect a driving range of around 320 miles and a 0-60 acceleration time of 2.3 seconds from the 2025 Taycan. With a 0-60 time of under one second, the 2025 Tesla Roadster is faster than the 2025 Porsche Taycan. Porsche also says buyers can charge the Taycan at 800-volt DC charging stations at up to 320 kW. As a high-performance electric Supercar, the 2025 Roadster will offer greater charging capacity at 800-volt DC charging stations as well. 

2025 Tesla Roadster Vs 2025 Audi E-Tron GT RS

Autorevolution recently spotted the 2025 Audi E-Tron testing, which signals its close release date. Interestingly, it was spotted with Porsche Calipers, meaning that the electric Audi E-Tron RS uses Porsche components. The 2025 Audi E-Tron GT RS has a 637 hp electric powertrain, giving it a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds. In a battle between the 2025 Roadster and the 2025 E-Tron GT RS, it’s clear that Tesla beats the Audi in the performance department. Now, we’re not scientists or engineers. But we know that the Roadster’s performance will come at a price of the driving range. The 2025 E-Tron GT RS will have an EPA range of 249 miles, which isn’t as impressive. But it could be more than the Roadster’s range.
