Ranking 5 Most Common Problems with the Toyota Passo

The Toyota Passo problems range from engine issues to high fuel consumption, with the most problematic years being 2006, 2007, and 2010.

Having looked into the Toyota Passo problems, I was surprised when I found out that my favorite compact car has racked up numerous complaints for its reliability issues over the years. Most of these problems go way back to the initial model years. The problems with the Toyota Passo range from engine issues to high fuel consumption, with the most problematic years being 2006, 2007, and 2010. These happen to be the years you should avoid if you want to enjoy your car ownership. As discussed in the Noah issues, most of these problems can be avoided if you service your car regularly and have the mechanic check under the hood occasionally.

The Passo is among the top choices for anyone who loves small cars. And, in Malawi, small cars make city traveling a breeze. But there’s also the factor of affordability, which also happens to be the car’s huge selling point. However, aside from its advantages, the Toyota Passo has many disadvantages that are worth looking into before you buy one. Here are the top-ranked problems with the Passo compact car.

1. Transmission/Gear Shifting Problems

One of the most common problems with the Toyota Passo is the transmission system, which affects the 2004, 2006, and 2007 models. Many owners reported experiencing issues in shifting, gears not changing, or the transmission system stuck in reverse. Gear shifting issues are also prevalent in the 2010 and 2017 Toyota Passo models.

The gear shifting problems with the Toyota Passo stem from transmission system wear, and lack of proper maintenance. Faulty sensors can also cause the car’s transmission to fail. There may be electronic control issues causing the gears to fail.

The transmission issue in the 2017 Passo or newer models is likely related to newer transmission software glitches or wear in components. The solution to the Toyota Passo’s transmission problems range from regular maintenance to replacement of gearbox components. But, before that, consult a mechanic to check the transmission control module

2. High Fuel Consumption

Another problem and a huge disadvantage of the Toyota Passo is the high fuel consumption issue, which largely affects the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2019 models.

In most cases, owners reported higher-than-expected fuel consumption in the Passo. Some models showed poor mileage despite maintenance.

The Toyota Passo’s high fuel consumption problems are largely caused by worn-out spark plugs, incorrect tire pressure, and dirty air filters. A miscalibration of the fuel system can also cause high fuel consumption issues.

So this problem is very prevalent in older models. In newer Passo models, the main causes of high fuel consumption are driving habits and a need for engine tuning. The best solution to fuel efficiency issues is regular maintenance. Consider checking transmission fluid levels and replacing air filters. Perform a fuel system cleaning or tuning.

3. Electrical and Dashboard Issues

Other common Toyota Passo problems are electrical failures, which affect the 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008 model years. So far, having covered the third issue, I’m starting to see a pattern of years to avoid.

On the Passo’s electrical problem cases, many owners of the 2005-2007 models reported seeing the Overdrive (OD) light flashing. In most scenarios, the flashing OD light indicates transmission-related electrical faults, such as faulty sensors or wiring issues.

Other users of the 2004 models reported ignition key problems. In most cases, ignition problems are caused by worn ignition switches or issues with the immobilizer system, especially in older Toyota Passo models.

If the dashboard lights are not working or the key light is flashing, it’s likely that your Toyota Passo has an electrical problem.

4. Steering and Suspension Problems

The steering and suspension issues are common in the 2008, 2009, and 2012 Toyota Passo models. For the steering issue, Passo owners report hearing knocking sounds from the steering rack in the 2008 and 2009 models.  Knocking sounds produced by steering racks usually indicate underlying problems with worn steering components, such as tie rods or ball joints, which are common in older cars.

The most commonly experienced suspension problem in the Toyota Passo is wobbling at high speeds, common in the 2012 model. Aside from being an issue with suspension, the wobbling at high speeds points to wheel alignment or tire balance issues.

5. Engine Performance Issues

One of the top Toyota Passo problems is the engine performance issue, which affects the 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2010 models.

Many Passo owners report engine misfiring engine vibration and knocking sounds coming from the engine of the 2004 and 2005 models. What causes these? Engine misfiring is often caused by problems with ignition coils, spark plugs, or fuel injectors. On the other hand, knocking sounds from the engine indicate poor fuel quality or engine timing issues. Engine vibrations at idle or low speeds could be due to worn engine mounts or dirty fuel injectors. Some models jerk during acceleration or slow take-off.

The best solution to the Toyota Passo’s engine issues is through regular maintenance. For other more specific issues, have the mechanic check the engine for damage and determine if replacement parts are necessary.
